BDFA Rankings Calculation

The points system is designed to take into account the both the size and difficulty of a given competition whilst remaining simple to administer. Thus fencers are rewarded for the number of opponents beaten and the difficulty of the event entered.

The aims of the system are:

Assist the BDFA in fair selection for World Cup events.Ensuring fencers sent to world are performing and those not sent are given a chance if results are good enough.
Incentivise fencers to compete.
Increase the participation levels at wheelchair fencing competitions.
Increase the total number of wheelchair fencing competitions.

Points are calculated as (No of entrants - (Finishing Position-1)) * multiplier. Points are only awarded if the fencer is within the percentage cut off.

The ranking period is a rolling 1 year ranking automatically calculated by taking 1 year from todays date.

FAQ

Q. Why do you not use a NIF system to account for the quality of fencers

A. This would require the BDFA to enter far more individual results and calculate NIF values for all competitions. In addition to being harder to administer it would also be more difficult for fencers to understand how many points are available at a given competition.

Q. Why the percentage cut off?

A. This is to ensure that fencers sent to more difficult events are not picking up more points simply by attending than another fencer who is doing well at a weaker event.
